The Cotopaxi National Park is an ecological sanctuary of 36,000 hectares surrounding the highest active volcano in the world: Mt. Cotopaxi. This fabulous sanctuary, with its treeless Andean moors (or páramo) dotted with fauna, is especially attractive to nature lovers. We will see herds of llamas, wild horses, and perhaps deer, rabbits, frogs and lizards and with some luck, we will spot an andean condor.
We will hike from the eastern slopes of the volcano, ojo de agua, towards the Inca ruins and go through the glacial valley to Limpiopungo Lagoon. We will hike at 3,800 meters and cross Cotopaxi National Park, around Limpiopungo and along a small trail that leads to the summit of Rumiñahui Volcano. Over one hundred bird species and 50 species of endemic Andean trees, as well as, deer, fox and sometimes puma can be observed while hiking this nature reserve – and all within easy reach of the bustling town of Quito.
We reach the entrance of the Pasochoa Forest within the collapsed crater just 30 km. south of Quito. We will start our hike in this exuberant forest, boasting a wide range of highland trees and shrubs, as well as orchids, bromeliads, lichens, and ferns. Prolific bird life includes at least 11 species of hummingbirds. Other birds endemic to Ecuador are also easily spotted along the trails.
